Welcome from the Head of Department

Dear Visitor,

Dear Student,

A warm welcome to the Department of Early Years Learning and Care of the School of Social Sciences at the University of Ioannina.

The Department of Early Years Learning and Care is the evolution of the Preschool Education Department of TEI Epirus. Transitioning through a period of intense scientific research and development, the DEYLC, as a new Department of the University of Ioannina, has reformed its curriculum to respond to new forms of knowledge related to the education and care of young children, whilst at the same time, maintaining its key focus and its identity.

The purpose of the Department is to provide high quality study, with the aim of acquiring knowledge and developing appropriate skills for the profession of the Early Childhood Educator. At the same time, it aims to conduct and promote scientific research in the field of education and care of young children.

The main objective is the thorough preparation of future preschool teachers, who will be properly equipped and trained to meet the demands of preschool education and care settings. Recognizing the value of early experiences for human development and drawing on principles of pedagogy, psychology and learning, and promoting interdisciplinary approaches, it aims towards the holistic development in early childhood, as well as the physical and mental well-being of infants and toddlers.

Upon completion of their studies, the graduates of our Department acquire the necessary scientific knowledge, abilities and skills so that, by applying scientifically documented methods of education, creative employment and care, they contribute to the all-around development and well-being of infants and young children.

We seek to harness the expertise and further support the development of the academic, administrative and technical staff of the Department towards providing high quality educational and research output as well as contributing socially to the field of education and care of infants and toddlers.

We hope that our website will support you in familiarizing yourself with the philosophy of the Department, the study and research opportunities offered as well as the physical premises, the services provided, and activities taking place.Y
